Voluma® XC

Voluma® XC Works

The loss of midface volume is one of the hallmarks of facial aging. This occurs in varying degrees of severity, and can lead to significant changes in the facial appearance. One of the most noticeable changes is the loss of cheekbone definition. Historically, this was addressed with surgery to tighten the overlying skin and lift the deeper soft tissues. More recently, volumizing fillers have been used to provide a similar ‘lift’ without surgery. The goal is to restore volume in the midface to create a natural, youthful face.

Benefits of Voluma® XC

JJuvéderm Voluma® XC is the first filler formulated with lidocaine that is FDA approved to restore age-related volume changes in the cheeks. Unlike other fillers commonly used to treat the midface, Juvéderm Voluma® XC is a hyaluronic acid (HA) filler. HA fillers are made from long chains of sugars that occur naturally in the skin. Juvéderm Voluma® XC is unique in that the HA is cross-linked through a process called Vycross that helps provide an excellent lifting capacity. This special cross-linking also helps to avoid degradation, making Voluma last almost twice as long as other fillers. Studies have shown that it can last up to 2 years. And since it is an HA filler, it can be molded and shaped into the desired contour after injection.

Who Can Receive  Voluma® XC

Virtually anyone with volume loss in their midface is a candidate for treatment with Voluma, as well as individuals with poorly defined cheekbones. Patients in their 30s, 40s, and 50s may not be appropriate candidates for surgery, but may benefit instead from Voluma treatment. Patients in their 60s and beyond who have more significant skin laxity and volume loss tend to require more filler volume. And while these patients are often good candidates for surgery, they often choose volumizing filler treatments due to surgery concerns such as anesthesia and potential complications.

What to Expect when being treated with Voluma® XC

Before your treatment, you’ll meet with Dr. Mary for a consultation and skin test. During this appointment, she will perform a physical examination and review your medical history to determine whether you’re a good candidate for the procedure. Dr. Mary Pritikin will also clearly explain risks and benefits of the procedure.

According to a clinical study, patients reported looking up to five years younger only six months after treatment.

Juvéderm Voluma® XC Side Effects and Risks

The most common side effects of being treated with Voluma® XC include tenderness, swelling, firmness, lumps/bumps, bruising, pain, redness, discoloration, and itching. Most side effects are mild or moderate and last 14 days or less. One of the risks with using this product is unintentional injection into a blood vessel, and while rare, the complications can be serious and may be permanent. These complications, which have been reported for facial injections, can include vision abnormalities, blindness, stroke, temporary scabs, or permanent scarring.
